approach

Careful attention to detail and a considered approach to working with the character of the house was required to fulfil the client’s brief. The original house was raised to create an entry and social areas at ground level, as well as to enhance the presence of the home from the street. At the rear, we worked with the idea of enhancing its character Queenslander features by developing a simple modern envelope opening to the northern yard.

The upper level connects to the ground with a series of voids in the entry and dining space, giving the narrow home a sense of space and allowing natural light to flow in.

Natural materials in contrast bring warmth and detail to the modern shape of the extension.

Results

The modern extension contains a series of voids allowing a continuous flow of spaces in an open plan arrangement. The original cottage houses more private areas and quiet spaces, where a considered material selection ensures a modern yet warm feel to both areas.
